Twelve

Tunnel to the Underground

Everywhere bustled with Halloween activity. Harriet and her friends trooped out of the Coffee House and continued down Goulding Lane. A long queue of costumed kids and their non-costumed parents had formed outside the Potions Lab. A waft of purple and green smoke spiralled out of the doorway where a girl dressed as a witch granted them entry in the creepiest voice she could muster. When she spied Wayne, she fluttered her fingers at him in a stupid, gooey way, completely ruining her eerie persona. He nodded back at her in acknowledgment.

Tyrone mooched backwards to join Harriet, leaving Lily and Wayne in front. He remained in silence for a minute or so and took one look at her then threw a glance at Wayne. “You like him, don’t you?”

“He’s a friend, yeah.” Harriet couldn’t look up. Seeing Lily and Wayne laugh together felt like a kick in the stomach. “He likes Lily anyway.”

“True.” Tyrone leaped over a pile of spilled rubbish, holding out his hands to steady himself. “But he doesn’t like her in that way, though, I can tell. Wayne gets on with everyone, man.”

“Really?” Harriet’s insides dissolved into gloop. “Does he… has he ever said anything bad about me?”

“You? Nah, why would he? I know he’s got stuff going on and that, but he’s solid. He’s got your back.” Tyrone scuffed his trainer on the pavement.

Harriet beamed on the inside. She would’ve given Tyrone a hug if he was the affectionate type. Funny that his mum was a nurse who showed her patients affection on a daily basis, yet her son treated people like they all had Chickenpox.

The time on the church clock had just gone half past three. Five and a half hours left. A lump of sick inched up her throat.

So many more questions whizzed around her head. All the kids were dashing about enjoying the Halloween festivities. How would Silas get rid of them? What did it mean to become part of the curse? Would she continue as a spirit, reliving her death every Halloween like Mohana? She couldn’t think about it anymore.

She hadn’t even realised that they were walking along Olde Pie Streete. She’d been so wrapped up in her own thoughts that she’d lost all awareness of what was going on around her, including a boy who had to swerve around her. That woke her up.

Lily’s face appeared over her shoulder. “We are here. Where is the map?”

The hut stood directly in front of them: a small beamed cottage with a thatched roof bigger than the building itself. A tiny oak table sat outside the open door where upon it was a brown bucket filled with water. A long line of laundry was attached from the roof to a nearby signpost. Wayne and Tyrone were already wandering around outside the hut, inspecting the area.

“What are we supposed to be looking for?” said Wayne, jerking back as a large pair of pink knickers hit him in the face. “Bloody hell. Who hung their tent out to dry?”

Tyrone snorted like a pig, elbowing Wayne in the chest.
